«Bittersweetness. Perhaps the word that best defines the nature and behaviour of humans. We are capable of the best and the worst, capable of love and hate, of happiness and sadness, luck and misfortune, we are both bitter and sweet at all times.
Bittersweetness is also one of the best
qualities that the music of the DOPO collective has to offer. You can find it in all of their songs, and that's what makes their sound so human, so unique. The power to make us happy and sad at the same time. And we wonder: 'how could we not love this? how could this not be part of our lives?'. And it couldn't, because DOPO's music translates into sounds the feelings we have while living our everyday lives. This is our sound.
'Blue Lands' is to be - unfortunately or not - DOPO's demise. After this, DOPO will end but their legacy is here for everyone to discover, and in a way, will live on in our memories. 'Blue Lands' is also the opening track of this release and probably the best song they've done, ever. But this album has some really beautiful gems inside, like 'The Long Red Fires of the Dying Day', the most Animal Collective-y of all tracks, minus the usual freakish beat. In this album we can also find the most loose DOPO ever, as they used a generous amount of field recordings in the compositions, of which 'Sea-lion of the Sea' is a great example of, and also one of my favorite 'under two minutes' tracks of all time.
You will find as well the usual hypnotic guitar strings all over the album, plus some special moments, like this one
in 'A Delicate Turn and Twist' which has a delicious distortion guitar which reminded me immediately of some of Sonic Youth's best musical moments. There's well placed drones in 'A Long Wave of Yellow Light', more 'around the bonfire' oddities in 'The Crowd of Little Men' and... I'm not telling you more. «Subterranean valleys and peaks, showcasing the duality of chaos and order, cobbled beats overlaid with environmental recordings and slightly arrhythmic acoustics. M83 and Radiohead without all the distracting overproduction. Personal yet ethereal, places where memories are made, only to decay or change, subtly but significantly, over time. (Despite the shivery strumming acoustics, I suddenly recalled fond memories of old PC MIDI soundtracks like Diablo and Master of Orion, which I hope DOPO takes as a compliment.) «Não conhecia os Dopo, até que há alguns dias comecei a notar algum ruído, no Fórum Sons, a propósito do anúncio como próxima edição da netlabel Test Tube. Naturalmente que fiquei curioso e fiz o download assim que dei conta que a edição tinha sido colocada online.
"Blue Lands" é o quarto, e pelo que descobri, entretanto, último álbum deste projecto do Porto que se movimenta(va) na área do folk rock psicadélico experimental e ambiental. Este disco tem sido uma das minhas companhias musicais mais frequentes neste últimos 3 dias e tem-se revelado uma muito agradável surpresa. Não sei qual ou quais os motivos que levam o projecto a dar por encerradas as 'hostilidades', mas tendo em conta toda a criatividade e a beleza dos temas presentes neste álbum só posso afirmar que lamento duas coisas: primeira, não me ter apercebido da sua existência antes, embora esse seja um facto compensável, já que há mais 2 álbuns do projecto disponíveis no catálogo da Test Tube ("Last Blues, To Be Read Someday" e "For the Entrance of the Sun"); segunda, que não nos continuem a brindar com música desta qualidade.»

«Última paragem da DOPO viagem. Chegar a um ponto de partida é o melhor que se pode esperar quando a vitalidade não se perdeu pelo caminho. E no caso dos DOPO, colectivo da minha predilecção, o remate da jornada abre as portas ao que daqui para frente se espera: o aparecimento de outros projectos, convergentes ou de desirmanada melancolia, a abraçar pelos músicos que um dia se acoitaram sob aquela designação. O momento é importante, tanto mais que Blue Lands o ponto de maturação de um conjunto de ideias que vinha a ser trabalhado desde 2004, quando o grupo nos entrou pelos ouvidos com a sua música desconcertante, e arrevesada na forma descomprometida como discretamente se foram afirmando no circuito da música informal. Recordo os bons momentos que foram 'Last Blues, To Be Read Someday' e 'For the Entrance of the Sun', na Test Tube, e o CDr 'Crossing Birds', na Foxglove. Sem se levarem muito a sério, deixam uma impressão forte de imperfeição inacabada e de inspirada libertação no modo de criar música livre de todos os rótulos e categorizações, um psicadelismo ante e pós qualquer coisa, sem marcas temporais que lhe prendam o pé, que tanto obedece a escolhas intencionalmente direccionadas como à mais casual e imprevisível derivação, sem rumo nem vontade de chegar. Tudo feito com entrega, entusiasmo e desconcertante ingenuidade. É preciso atrevimento. Acaba o DOPO. Viva o DOPO (depois).»

«Tenho para mim, sinceramente, que cada novo disco dos DOPO deve ser seguido de forte comemoração; pela energia - interior e exterior; pelo espírito criativo; um pouco por tudo. Infelizmente, esta é também uma viagem que termina aqui. “Blue Lands” é o documento final de uma aventura sonora iniciada algures pelo ano de 2004. Mas para já, e depois de discos sempre surpreendentes como “Last Blues, To Be Read Someday” (Test Tube, 2005), “For the Entrance of the Sun” (Test Tube, Lovers & Lollypops, 2007) ou “Crossing Birds” (Foxglove, 2007), os DOPO deixam-nos com este “Blue Lands”. Belíssimo. Como sempre, são momentos de interior diversão, criativos, são momentos de intensa exploração ambiental, de vivências. Às vezes triste, outras vezes não, sempre DOPO.
