«'Moorland' is the outcome of a year living in Scotland. As part of Mensa project this album tries to descrive sonically my personal point of view of scottish landscape. The album is based on the idea of seeking a shared space in which sound composition and landscape can meet.
'A Drone That Grows As The Ferry Arrives' is a sonic experiment in which a drone is built according with a soundscape of a ferry arriving to the deck. The original soundscape was recorded at Mallaig, Scotland while waiting for the boat to Skye.
'Blackford Hill Quarry' is a sonic representation of a real space in Edinburgh in which the reverberation of the location is very particular. Blackford Hill Quarry is now abandoned.
'Glencoe' is a grandiloquent piece that wants to represent the scale of the Glencoe Valley juxtaposed with it's historical violent past.
And 'Moorland', the final piece is a farewell piece, a celebration of scottish moorlands, valleys and hills. Moorland is a track that flies over the territory, across mounts, trees and grass and panoramically descends to the North Sea and vanishes.
The sound source for this last piece is an original recording of the sound that grass makes on a windy day.
Finally the whole album is my personal homage to Scotland and the territory in which I have lived for one year. Moorland is an emotional soundscape work, built to be a souvenir, and a gift at the same time.»

This EP contains two extended versions of pieces that are released here as part of this album, 'Blackford Hill' and 'Hermitage of Braid'. «Released a month ago, Mensa‘s Moorland has been one of those albums I’ve been meaning to write about. However the two good reviews of these works at Disquiet and Netlabels & News probably slowed me down a bit, but what the hell. The combination of drones and field recordings lend itself to a special eeriness. Even with all the goodness that is Moorland, add to that with Mensa’s remix Braid Heritage (Resting Bell), one comes away with two works that are quite exceptional. One can imagine, if Heathcliff had an iPod, this is what he would have been listening to when wandering the moors.* As a side note, you also might know Mensa better as Edu Comelles the curator of netlabel Audiotalia.»

«Edu Comelles es, entre otras cosas, el administrador del netlabel Audiotalaia. Segun he podido leer en Oír Para Creer, Edu va a aparcar durante una temporada el proyecto de experimentación sonora Mensa. Antes de hacer esto ha publicado dos trabajos con el material que tenia inédito. Un trabajo recién publicado en Test Tube y otro en Resting Bell que un poco mas abajo, mi compañero de blog os proponía mezclar con una grabación de campo. Las grabaciones de campo son a su vez uno de los ingredientes fundamentales de este interesante proyecto. En "Moorland" intenta compartir con nosotros su percepción personal del paisaje escoces, fruto de su estancia durante un año en estas tierras. Cada pista parte de, y se inspira en entornos sonoros reales, tales como la llegada de un ferry a puerto, el valle de Glencoe, los páramos escoceses o la cantera de Blacford y su especial reverberación. El álbum es un homenaje del autor a Escocia y su territorio, "construido para ser un recuerdo y un regalo al mismo tiempo."
El EP hermano de "Moorland" apareció hace dos semanas en Resting Bell y consiste en dos versiones de tracks de este álbum. Todo esto forma parte a su vez del proyecto Walking Compositions, donde se pretenden generar experiencias que relacionen al oyente y los entornos sonoros específicos por donde este camina o pasea, en este caso la reserva natural de la ermita de Braid, en el centro de Edimburgo. De esta manera se crean interacciones sinestésicas entre paisaje y sonido. Todo muy recomendable, y si quieres oír al propio Edu hablando de algunos de sus proyectos, lo puede hacer aquí, en el blog del programa de radio Intangible23, con el cual se enorgullece de colaborar Netlabels & News.»

«Cuando estuve en València hace un par o tres de meses Edu Comelles (aka Mensa) me comentó que tenía ganas de terminar con este proyecto, o al menos aparcarlo por una buena temporada. Actualmente se encuentra sumergido en su nuevo proyecto chelo + laptop del que esperamos tener noticias en forma de disco pronto. Pero antes de darle al stop al proyecto Mensa había cierto material que debía ver la luz. Concretamente me refiero a su anterior disco publicado hace muy poco en Resting Bell y que ya comentamos y a este que ahora presenta en Test Tube.
Se trata de material grabado y compuesto durante su estancia en Escocia, unas piezas basadas en grabaciones de campo realizadas en diferentes escenarios de ese pais para luego manipularlas y darles forma de ambient drone meditativo.
Aquí nos lo cuenta él mismo.»
